University of Michigan-Flint: Mpowering My Success

University of Michigan-Flint Mpowering My Success program provides previous foster youth admitted to the University with life skills assessment and training, weekly meetings with a Life Skills Coach Mentor, contact four hours per month, financial support including emergency funds, champion advocates working on the student’s behalf, on campus housing assistance, including during school breaks, and helpful guidance for success in college and life. 

Program Eligibility/Affiliation Criteria

Students must be under the age of 21 and have been in a verifiable foster care placement  under the supervision of the Department of Health and Human Services starting at age 14 or older. Students that were adopted from foster care after their 16th birthday are also eligible. Enrollment in the program requires student participation in support services such as weekly meetings with the program’s Life Skills Coach and mentor contact up to 4-hrs per month.

Highlights of majors, programs, departments, and activities:

UM-Flint faculty from over 100 areas of study have gained an international reputation for their dedication to engaged learning. Professors pour their expertise and creativity into the development of research and service-learning projects that match course curriculum with global issues. These projects bring learning to life, address community needs, and fulfill students’ desires to contribute to the common good. By promoting student involvement in today’s most pressing issues, the University produces bold graduates that are unafraid of challenges and willing to contribute to something bigger than themselves. In 2010, UM-Flint received the prestigious Carnegie Classification for Civic Engagement. Then in 2012, Michigan Campus Compact selected UM-Flint as the first recipient of the Michigan Engaged Campus of the Year Award.
