Fostering Futures Scholarship

The Fostering Futures Scholarship awards youth who have experienced foster care in the State of Michigan. 

The following are important items to remember (Eligibility Requirements):

  • Student must have been in foster care after the 13th birthday
  • There is no upper age limit.  Student can receive funding at any age.
  • Student must be an undergradutate, attending a Michigan public or private 4-year college/university or a community college.
  • Funding can be used only for the following: Tuition, fees, room/board, books, and supplies/equipment required for enrollment.
  • This funding can be used along with ETV.

Other important information:

  • Students are only required to submit one application per academic year 
  • The Fostering Futures Scholarship application period usually opens in March and ends in August.  Late Applications are not accepted so double check the website for exact due dates! 
  • The student is responsible for notifying MI Student Aid of a change of address or college choice.
  • The FFS is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Funding amounts vary based on need and any other financial aid the student is receiving.

Frequently Asked Questions: 

Q:  I already applied last year, do I have to apply again?

A:  Yes! Students must complete the application one time per year to be considered!

Q:  When is the deadline?

A:  The application is usually open from March to August 1st. Late applications will not be accepted.

Q:  Do I have to send any extra documentation to be considered?

A:  Most students do not.  However, if we are unable to verify your foster care status with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), we will reach out to you requesting court documentation.

Q: If I decide to change my college, do I need to notify your office?

A: You must update your college with our office.  You can do this by logging into your MiSSG Student Portal account at www.michigan.gov/missg or by contacting our office at 1-888-447-2687 or email mistudentaid@michigan.gov.

Q: Can I use this scholarship at an out-of-state college?

A: No. Students must be attending a Michigan degree-granting public or private community college or university. A list of approved institutions is available on the Fostering Futures Scholarship Fact Sheet.

Q:  How much money will I receive?

A: The award amount will be determined annually depending on how many young people apply. Maximum amounts have ranged from $3000-$5000 per year for the last five years. 

Q: How will I receive the scholarship?

A: Approved scholarships will be issued to the financial aid office.  Payments for Fall will be sent to the college the previous November, and payments for Spring will be sent to the college February the previous year.
